What helped you decide?

Hi just wondering what it was that helped others decide which support group/recovery centre they would join to start the process of recovery?
There are a few around our area, but I just don't know what I should be looking for to decide which one is best for me? Any Ideas?
Women Need to Fight Harder

To me, It really seems that women need to fight harder to prove themselves once they have started the recovery process. Even more so if there are children or partner involved.
Society does not look favourably upon a mother or wife who's faults include addiction of any kind. Just like differences with salaries and fair treatment, yet again, women get the raw deal and have to become "super woman" with no addictions, secrets or anything else in order to be acceptable to society :(
Just my view anyways

Yes unfortunately I think that alcohol is such a "normal" substance that in most cultures and societies, teenagers abuse alcohol because it is legal and readily available..... this abuse continues into adulthood for some and well, we all know how that can end up :(

I have seen first hand the damage that drink driving can do..... A close friend of mine was drinking with mates, and they all decided to drive into town. It was just a normal suburban area......
Coming home from the grocery store they hit a light pole. My friend was the only survivor, he lost his 2 best mates that night and was so badly injured his face had to be reconstructed from a photo..... It is one of the most intense periods of my life, having to go thru that.
I have no idea where he lives now, we lost touch, but his story will stay with me forever and i will pass it onto my children when they are old enough to understand :(

I think it comes from somewhere in my past, but I have repeating nightmares that my father is an alcoholic.... He wasn't in real life, well not what I would call an alcoholic anyway.... I really haven't quite found an explanation yet as to why I might dream it but I am sure I will figure it out eventually.....hhhhmmmmm

Well, Like others that have replied, I like to think that addictions can be overcome..... I guess in the WORST case scenario that a serious addiction would lead to death, but thankfully in our society full of various types of addiction, death is least likely to be the extreme end of ones addiction....
At what stage do you reach that limit?? well if I am interpreting your question correctly I would say that for a person to reach death due to an addiction then sadly they probably would have faught a long, long battle with whatever it is they are addicted to :(

Oh wow, that is horrible :( I guess he died doing something he loved, but it just goes to show that doing anything to the extreme is risking your life :)

I totally agree. Most people I know who have battled an addiction have absolutely replaced it with another addiction, In some cases its been a healthier option such as exercise etc, but sometimes not.
I guess that often there is a deeper reason people get "addicted" in the first place, perhaps if they battle those demons the need to have something to fulfill them might be rid of also??

As strange as it may seem I listen to Michael Jackson "man in the mirror" It forces me to take a good look at myself and really question why and what I am doing!!!
