What is the Ban Doing to You?

More and more it is getting harder to finding somewhere for a smoke. At work now smoking is banned on premises, in the car parks and for a certain radius around the place. You would have to get in your car and go for a drive on your break to have a cigarette.

I can't afford that! It's time to quit.

I not sure that all young kids are oblivious to the risks, nor do they think that smoking couldn't possibly hurt them. I was fully aware of the risks when I started, however I cared so little for my life that I would have welcomed the chance to end it.

My friend do not openly admit to wanting to quit.

There are a lot of those stories aren't there? 'Oh, forget it, you'll never succeed, no one ever does' and so on.

So it's nice to hear that you did it, thanks for sharing.

You are so right! I used to think about this when the smoking groups went out for a quick one and I was unable to leave my desk. Now that it has been banned on the premises, I don't worry so much because no one leaves together.

What have you tried to help you quit smoking? Did you do nicotine replacement therapies, or just distractionary methods such as chewing normal, plain chewing gum?

Did any of it help you?

You know, I won't miss smoking. There is so much about it that repulses me.

The worst I think is the way it makes us smell. The smell clings to my hair even when it is washed, its disgusting.
Replacing One Addiction With Another

It is my experience that people who have addictions need something in their life to focus on. Even when they successfully overcome one addiction, they end up replacing that habit with something else.

The only difference is that the new habit is healthier and so is not considered to be an addiction.

I have yet to begin my efforts at escaping my addiction. I have left this for too long, put it off too many times. Tomorrow is the day, no more tobacco. I am nervous already!
Counselling

Have you tried counselling to help you quit smoking? Did it help?

There is a counselling service offered by my health insurance company as a part of their quitting smoking program. Counselling always seemed silly for something like this, but I have really got to find a way to quit now and stay quit.

How many times in your life have you stopped smoking?

So far I have tried three times. Each time I have gone as long as a couple of months without before something comes along and knocks me on my butt and I light up again.

Drying out at home is going to be really hard. You will need a really strong support system, and make sure that you are faithful with taking your meds, to the minute. If you don't things will get really bad.

And drink a LOT of water whilst you are going through this. Dehydration is one of the reasons that most alcoholics dry out in hospital.

I must admit that replacement really scares me. I can see that replacing smoking with say, exercise would be ok, but most things are not so healthy.

Good luck with staying on the wagon.

How long is counselling like this normally recommended for? It is rather costly to say the least as it isn't covered by my insurrance.

Lol, you are right. The way to get rid of it is to quit-there is no other way. Hopefully soon I will be amongst the ranks of the ex smokers.

It's been ten days since my last drink. Last night I slept horribly, despite taking all my pills. I can't wait for this to get easier. I am just so tired right now, both physically and mentally.

It's a nice day. I am torn between getting out and spending some time in the sun or just staying in bed all day.

I wish this milestone felt bigger then in that case! Feels almost like a let down. I need to reach for something more, like going back to work.
Saying No

My work mates were always the ones that I drank with. I am not saying that they too have a problem, because as far as I know when we left they went home to their family and I went home to drink more.

But Monday I return to work and will for the first time face the situation head on. Monday I have to say no when they go off to the bar.

I know I can do it, but what will I do with the spare time!?

For those that consider they have a problem, what was too much TV? Is it how much control it has on your life? How much impact it has?

I am now on a bunch of meds to help me come off my problem addiction but I worry about replacement addiction with these prescription aids. Were your problems slow to develop or did you see it come on fast?

When you made the choice to quit, did you throw out all of your cigs? Or did you finish what you had and then that was your quitting point?

Did you find when you quit that it was best to replace the habit with something else? As in, the fiddling-did you play with and carry a pen to keep your fingers busy? Or was that not a problem?

Lots of people say that you gain weight when you quit smoking. Did you have a problem with this? Were you able to control it and keep it in order, or did you then have to deal with weight after smoking?
