Re: How can you tell if you have recovered?

I am not sure that one fully can recover, simply because there is always a chance that something or someone can cause the addiction to reappear. I do agree that if you are not tempted by the thing that you were addicted to then you are as close as you will ever be to being fully recovered.

You are well on your way to making the recovering process successful to you. Just remember that you are never alone if you need to ever talk to someone these forums are a good source. You may not get an answer as quickly as you might want but you will get the encouragement to continue with you efforts.

NO, do not go back. Keep in mind that although you are in pain your body has went through something major and it will take some getting used to. I have a friend who has rods in her back from corrective scoliosis surgery. She has had to have replacements a few times but non since she reached adult hood. You will learn to get used to the way your body is now, and the pain will subside when you body has healed itself from the trauma.
So keep your chin up and you will be fine.

You are the one that needs to say you are going to do this. Whatever you reason for quitting are you need to make sure that you remind yourself each time you feel the need to smoke of why you are wanting to quit you have to make that the priority no matter what. Remember to tell yourself what has happened and how it needs to not happen again.

Well you know, everyone has addictions and most people have a bad addiction or habit, they just cannot stop. Whether or not they admit is is the point. You need to decide you want to stop whatever you are doing. I think for me I am addicted to driving. I have to drive everywhere even if it is down the block. Used to have some bad addictions but worked hard to remove them from my life.

There are plenty of ways that you can stop. It really depends on the person themselves, and for many people abstinence is the way to make it happen, and it works as well when you are seeing a therapist. So he should not feel bad, if it works for him that is great.

Addictions are a funny thing, when you really think about it. They are all caused by you doing something and then doing it more and more and so on. You know when you think in moderation you can overcome anything you want to. whether a food addiction or a drug addiction. It is mind over matter in any aspect and you need to be ready for the change.

yes, this the thing I was just posting in another thread. You need to stop it before it becomes an addiction. Although that is not as easy as it is to talk about. But we all have the ability within us to do it.

yes, telling yourself you can stop or make a change can be easy if you honestly believe that it will happen. You really have to want it to make it happen. You cannot just go around in life saying I am going to stop as this does not work.

I think that too many people are addicted to computer and even more people are addicted to work. Check out all those people who bring work home every night. I know that sometimes it is just not possible to get away from work without it but still you have to be able to say, no my home life if for my family and friends.

Good for you. You love your son a lot and it shows because you want to make sure that his mom is around for a long time. I wish that more people would consider things like that instead of having the attitude that its my life I can do what I want. At least you realize who gets hurt in the long run if you are not there.

Part of being a good parent is teaching them right from wrong, how to make choices and that each choice has a positive or negative consequence. if you have a good relationship with your kids they will know they can come to you when they are pressured to do things that they may not want to do.

It is like drinking diet soda. Once you get used to the taste it is not about that. I have never figured out why people like it so much either. Guess that is something I will never have the answer to.

I think those answers are both right along with, when you have the desire to drink first thing in the morning and you cannot live without having a drink. There are many ways one can become addicted to alcohol and each person is different.

You can encourage her all you want, but if she does not want to stop she just wont. Maybe you should find some pictures of fetal alcohol syndrome and show her what it is actually doing to the child.

Each person needs to know their limitation when drinking. If you do not know what your limitations are and you feel the need to drink until you throw up that is a problem that should be addressed very soon after you notice that is what is happening.

I wanted to know your thoughts on making marijuana legal. There has been a lot of talk about it and I wanted to know what each of you think might happen if they decided to make it legal.

It is very sad that people are in denial about being addicted to the internet. I know that people think that you cannot be addicted but that is not true. it is actually very easy to become addicted to the internet and more and more people are becoming addicted at much earlier ages.

I would have to say that encouraging your kids to go out and play, taking grandma on a walk more often and just spending time with the TV off as a family will help to keep children and others from spending to much time watching TV. We are becoming lazy and inactive because of our addictions to these things that we feel cannot hurt us.

I agree, we all make bad choices. The last thing we should ever have to deal with is someone else blaming us for their inadequate acts in life. So what is the solution to this problem. Does anyone have a clue.

Can anyone tell me, what could be done to help a friend who does not want your help. Are there ways that you can help them without them knowing it. I would like some suggestions if anyone has any.

A persons problem is determined by what they know and how familiar they are with themselves. Although some people cannot admit there is a problem, others do not realize that it has become a problem. So helping them to know they have one is the key.

You know that part of the title is so very true, it is deceptive thinking and we are only deceiving ourselves. I think this would be an interesting book to read and see what they really have to say about it and how you can break those habits. I know that it is often difficult to do so. Especially if you have no clue where to start.

Well, that is because your body is having withdrawals the same way as a person on drugs has withdrawals. You need to learn to curb that in a different manner. I have heard that eating something other than the item with sugar or doing something else, can help a lot.

When you work on solving the problem one day at a time you will realize that it could be fixed or stopped in a shorter period of time. If you think of the long run it might stop you in your tracks.
