Kathy Asta says, “it’s an addiction”. The “it” isn’t drugs,
alcohol, gambling or anything you can be arrested for. Its shoes! Asta had more
than 100. But she isn’t the only woman with a shoe addiction, about 20 women
wander around Saks Fifth Avenue between tables of Manolo, Blahniks, and Jimmy
Choos. They range in age from mid 20’s up to their late 60’s, but all have an
unabashed love of shoes. There is even a social and networking group for shoe
lovers called Hello Stiletto, started out with only 70 members. It started out
in Boston but opened up three other chapters, in Chicago, Atlanta and Naples.
In Saks Fifth Avenue in New York has its 8th
floor completely devoted to shoes. They stock more than 100,000 pairs and have
even been given its own ZIP code by the U.S. Postal Service: 10022-SHOE. For
the members of Hello Stiletto, shoes are more than
an accessory. In platform wedges, pointy-toed stilettos or leopard print flats,
the women can express who they really are or craft who they dream of being. It
doesn’t matter if they’ve had a bad week or if they’ve gained 10 pounds; it
doesn’t matter that they won’t buy the $650 Dior sandals or the $800 Jimmy
Choos that they’re trying on at Saks. For the moment the shoes are on their
feet, they feel sexy, strong and glamorous. Their shoes transform them.
Hello Stiletto now has 1,400 members. One of the members
confessed she bought 6 pairs of shoes in one weekend, but instead of being
shocked she was excited. She said she has over 200 pairs of shoes, and would
rather not share how much she spends on her shoes in a year. She jokes she has
been a show lover since birth. She said she had to hire a mover specifically
because of all the shoes.
Members say it’s kind of like a book club, except you don’t
have to do anything except show up in your favorite shoes. It’s free to join but there is one risk, and
it’s how much they spend on shoes a year.
