I have read over and over that if you are going to quit, then cold turkey is the way to go. When you gradually wean off cigarettes, you are still filling your body with nicotine, so the withdrawal process is longer. I know this is a gross comparison, but think about if you had to cut your finger off. Would you want it done in one chop and would you want to cut a little of it each day? Both ways are going to hurt, but the prolonging on one is greater. Smoking is one of the hardest things to give up. I am struggling myself.

Well the one you named ( Lindsay Lohan) started out as a child celebrity. I have noticed a tendency in the majority of child celebrities to get into this lifestyle. Kids have adult pressures on them at a young age, and not only that but they are also treated like adults and exposed to a lifestyle that children just cannot handle. It takes really strong parents to keep children celebrities in line, and even then it is hard.

I've heard a lot of other celebrities say that if they were brought up in Hollywood as a child star, then they probably would've developed an addiction also. It's hard constantly being targeted by the media and every waken moment of your life talked about, I know that I'd have a hard time with it. I'm glad she found a sober partner to be with also, even though he has a history of drug use, if they're working through recovery together, then I'm sure its all for the best.

You are absolutely right. From Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, Dana Plato, Leif Garrett, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Tatum O'neil, Britney Spears, Edward Furlong, Macauley Culkin etc. (and this is just to name a few), children celebrities almost always get addicted. I know there are exceptions to the rule and some children celebrities come out unscarred, but they are the minority. As appealing as it may be, I don't think I would ever let my child become a child celebrity if given the chance. They are being exposed to things that most are just too vulnerable to handle, and in turn they turn to drugs and alcohol to a point where some will never recover.

I truly hope Lindsay does it this time. It is always great to have a partner that knows what you are going through.

You mean they still let teachers smoke on campus in some areas ? Yeah, that's just disgusting. I know it is extremely hard to quit, but don't do it around underage people. Not only are they seeing a role model (or one who should be) smoke, but they are also being potentially exposed to 2nd hand smoke.

People with Addison's Disease that drink too much have a higher risk of developing Hypoglycemia. Other than that I think alcohol will have the same effect that it would anyone else that drinks too much. From what you just read, it seems as if this guy is definitely addicted to alcohol. Also, their life expectancy would be the same as any other as LONG AS they keep up their medication

Many people grow out of this when they get older, but the problem is that you never know who will become addicted and who will not. Some people can sail through their college years partying and then give up drinking without even a second thought, while others become alcoholics It just varies by each person. Try taking some self tests and maybe even talking to someone who can tell you if your traits and habits may lead to alcoholism.

Would you consider a male, healthy, and doing very well in most every aspect of his life an alcoholic if : He drinks at least a case of beer every weekend to himself? He says he doesn't have a problem but he spends most of the weekend getting drunk, then recovering the next day. He claims he can stop anytime he wants, but that it is his business if he wants to drink or not and that it is not affecting anyone else.

When we were driving home from the movies, there was a man swerving so badly that it was obvious he was badly intoxicated. A friend of mine in the car called the police from her cell. The driver almost hit a car twice with a small child and a baby in the back seat, and the traffic was so congested no one could move out of his way. The police were there asap, and hauled him away. I say if you ever see something like this, always call the police. It could save someone's life.

Ship them to rehad would be my suggestion. It definitely sounds like they have a problem with marijuana. Good Luck ! I know when I was 17 I didn't want to listen to anyone either. Also, as hard as it may be, call the police next time you catch them with it. Sometimes scaring them works wonders.

Some people might be affected some might not, I think that in most casses the smoker does not care how much cigarettes cost. Just think of the people who are addicted to drugs , one dose can cost as much as 10 packs of cigarettes , think of that, Addiction is addicion.

Well I think that most smokers care about the price increases, but cigarette addiction is so powerful the people will just keep on paying those high prices.
Using Ex lax

I've heard that some people will eat all they want and then take a lot of Ex lax after to get rid of what they ate. I don't see how this can be too healthy. Has anyone heard of this or known anyone to do this ?

It's been said that once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. I think there will always be something in your head reminding you of what you really liked about it. Counteract those thoughts by reminding yourself of all the horrible things involved with drinking, and constantly remind yourself exactly why you quit.

My question is if you are not a smoker, and have not been a smoker, then why are you in the smokers thread talking about their lungs ? I think every smoker realizes what smoking can do. Unfortunately most people try it to see what the big deal is, thinking they can quit, then get hooked. I am glad you are not a smoker too. I would not wish that on anyone who has never started.

One thing I learned when trying to quit is that the craving for a cigarette only lasts a few minutes. When that craving comes on, just try to think of anything else at all besides smoking. The craving will come a lot. Just keep moving your mind to other thoughts as best as you can. It will get easier the more you do it.

He'll get a case and then drink about half of them one night, then finish off the rest the next night. It is clear that he's drunk. I know the signs of alcoholism and have drank myself many times to get drunk, and that seems as though exactly what he is doing. Another big sign is that he gets very angry if anyone confronts him on it.

That used to be the only reason I would drink would be to get smashed. I've grown out of it and now I usually limit myself , but there still are times when I will indulge and get completely wasted ? Does that make me an alcoholic? I don't know. That is why I am here though. I want to talk to others about alcohol addiction and hear more personal stories. I've heard time and time again that if you can let a drink go without thinking twice about it, then you probably do not have a problem. However, I would like to more about that theory.

This happens almost eveywhere. Have you noticed when you walk in the mall you can smell chocolate chip cookies and pretzels so well that it makes you hungry? They use big fans to distribute the scent and entice people to come in and buy. As for commercials, the worst ones are the toy commercials...ugh..

What exactly defines a television addict ? I mean some people are couch potatoes, but if need be, they could give up television. Would they be considered addicts or is it the ones that cannot give up television no matter what ?

There are other symptoms as well that can get much more nasty. Some people literally feel as if they are dying. Each person is affected differently, but I don't buy that some people can just walk away from cigarettes after being heavy smokers. I have never personally seen this happen, though some people have said they have done it.

It all depends. Yes, many insurance companies cover rehab. There are also many free rehab centers. Also, a lot of times the families of addicts will pitch in and do whatever it takes to get them clean.

What was the worst withdrawal symptom that you had? For me it's been the constant craving. Others are much worse and get nauseated and confused. I guess I was lucky in the sense I get some of the horrible things that can happen when you quit.

Yes, that is what I pretty much figured as well. There are other signs too, but until he admits it to himself that he indeed is an alcoholic, he will just keep going down that destructive path.

Yeah, it definitely could be that you have a short attention span. Many people with ADD will often do this as well. However, it could also mean that you just like to channel surf . I have never heard of channel surfing bein an addiction though.

You are right, I never thought of that, but you are absolutely right, my sister is like that, I mean, she puts ketchup in everything she eats, even cheese with ketchup, I think it's weird...

Just because someone puts ketchup on everything that they eat does not make them a "ketchup" addict. Now, I am no expert, and I very well could be wrong, but I have never heard of a ketchup addiction. Maybe a ketchup fetish, but never an addiction. I think it is just a personal preference.
