Yeah I agree that parents have to be responsible for their children and this parent is definitely not in that category, my parents were really strict and I used to do the same thing, I had a bestfriend whose mum was always drunk and used to get us alcohol and even cover for me when I would tell my parents I was staying at my friends house for a nice quiet evening in, but was out getting drunk. What happened was my bestfriends mum died, she got so drunk one evening and overdosed on pills. Though it would be cool to have a mum that buys alcohol and gets drunk with you, its even cooler to have parents that are protecting you and are alive.
Always picking the bad guys!

My bestfriend is literally always picking the bad guys, the guys that are on drugs or have just come out of prison and she always ends up getting hurt. Everyday her parents are telling her to find a nice man, with a stable job preferrably not a coke addict and start to settle down, she just says those types of men are boring and I want a real man thats fun! I kinda cant win with her and though she doesnt get too involved with what they are getting up to as in taking drugs but surely its bound to happen. I used to be attracted to the same type and so cant really preach to her, anyone else find that they are attracted to the bad guys?

I guess it depends on whether your getting drunk to just get wasted because its fun or you start drinking but then cant control it and get wasted - then I would say thats pretty much an alcoholic, an ex used to say he was not an alcoholic and just loved getting wasted and having fun, but actually if there was any alcohol in the house and said he just wanted one drink he would then be totally wasted as he couldnt control himself, hes now in rehab from drinking but I used to drink just to get wasted when I was younger but have grown out of it and cant think of anything worse now than waking up with the worse hangover in the world and not remembering any of the evening what a waste of money lol.

Yeah I have tried drugs, I have tried weed and also tried ecstasy. I then moved onto cocaine and had a very hard time getting of it. Cocaine gave me a great feeling and I used to get such a kick out of doing it, it really is something too hard to explain unless you have tried it and can relate to the feeling. I havent touched it for over 3 years but the want to do it does come back every now and then, I never got help for it just stopped.

yeah i do agree with you, also done coke before and never really thought that the mints resemble it either, i dont know many people that pick up sweets from the floor and start eating them and definitely think it is going a bit too far.

I would consider whether it is breaking the bank or not, it seems a lot of money to me but if you have a great job and its not affecting your money side of things then maybe its not too much. My friends spend thousands on shopping all on the credit card though!

No I dont think its bad - I think its sad lol. But I guess for some it is their life, if they have an addiction! There is just nothing worth watching anymore its the same old, same old.

Yeah I live in a country full of smokers to the point where the bank clerks are sitting smoking a fag when dealing with you, the police are sitting at their desks smoking as well as professional lawyers, if the country is really open for smoking then it will be really hard to stop that craving, let your family know though so at least it will help a bit and yeah pop some gum in, or brush your teeth when you get that craving.

Yeah you need to actually find out if she recognises that she has a problem before you can take action on how to help her, let her know how its affecting you all and that your worried, definitely record her and remind her of the night before and see what reaction you get.

My ex was an alcoholic and was for years going to AA meetings for help and his dad is still an alcoholic, hes telling me that hes recovered and hes not an alcoholic anymore, but when I saw him the other night he smelt of alcohol - he was really violent before and had a real addiction to alcohol that lost him his flat and nearly ended up in prison. Were never be back together but he is still a really good friend, I want to believe him but everyone is telling me once an alcholic always one. should I believe him?

Yeah thats sounds identical to my bestfriend and I think shes turning to them because she has her own problems but she cant see that she needs to get out fast as they are not helping her but making her worse, glad your sister found someone nice, just goes to show that the nice guys can be more fun!

Whenever I lose some weight people always tell me I look awful and really withdrawn, there are lots of men out there that prefer a bigger looking woman to a stick thin one - I think its great when you see a celebrity looking bigger, she shouldnt be getting the abuse for it but an applaud, my younger sister is always looking at stick thin celebrities and wishing to be like them!

I think it would be harder for men but thats only talking from experience and often found that men thought they could deal with it in their own way and didnt need help, women are more emotional and can talk more freely about things where as men tend to bottle everything up inside more and find it harder to talk about what drove them to the addiction etc, so I think its harder for men.

Yeah kids need to know about death, death is reality and its better to have them prepared for it than to be knocked senseless and confused when they get to experience it. As long as you explain it in the correct way to get them to understand as opposed to torturing their poor little minds then fine.

Yeah I reckon so, hes found himself at a point again where he has no control, he couldnt control the death of your mother and naturally he will be extremely emotional, confused and looking for something to block that pain, and alcohol can do that, though for a short time. Try and discuss it with him, dont even mention the alcohol at first but try and get him to open up, he is still grieving, when you can get him to be open and express himself then talk to him about the alcohol.
How do you react to hearing bad news?

How do you react when you hear bad news that someone has died or are suffering from a severe illness. My friend has had news that her mother has cancer and she just can not cry, shes hit the bottle and I know this is her way of coping with the news. I am terrible when hearing bad news, I seem to just laugh mainly from shock, I know everyone reacts differently some break down and cry, some show no emotion - what is yours?

Yeah good on you, it sounds similar to my experience with cocaine it was the fact that I actually enjoyed doing it rather than being addicted, I did get to the stage of addiction but I managed to beat it before it beat me. Well done to you and its good to hear your story.
Being a better person

There are lots of success stories on here of people quitting and how they did it and made their lives better which is really motivating for people on here that need support and help. I was once a cocaine addict though I say addict but I managed to beat it before it got a major control over my life. I was bought into the world of cocaine by an ex boyfriend and loved doing it, only when it started to mess me up a little and started to lose sight of things - as in my parents started to disown me rather than support me, I was spending every last bit of money I had to get the next lot in did I realise I had to change. It wasnt easy but then no one said it ever would be, I got through and though I dabbled a little bit during the process I have been clean for 3 years.
But one thing to remember, those addicts that clean themselves up and turn their lives around for the better, they are a better person now than before they became an addict because they saw the damage and turned everything around - its the experiences we have that create us to be something else.

Yeah I think parents know and moms have a natural ability to sense what their children are up to, my mom always knew when my brother was dabbling or smoking weed even though he didnt live at home, we under estimate our parents knowledge. Your mom carried you for 9 months and educated you I think she can probably sense when something is changing, even from the look in your eyes or if smoking weed from the smell - being more distant etc.
