Tips for Qutting Cold Turkey?

Hi everyone,

I am new here and a 14 year smoker. I want desperately to quit, and I want to do it all at once. I don't want to smoke a few a day and then gradually stop. I have tried that and..yuck. Can anyone give me some tips on how to get through the first days? My goal is to stop for good on New Years.

I used to smoke too, but for like 6 months only, when I was a teenager, than my friends and I decided to quit and it was so easy to quit all together with them, it was good to stop :D

Definitely a smart move. I have been smoking for years, and the more I smoke, the harder it gets. I wish I would have never started at all, but it would be a lot easier if I had stopped after 6 months.

I say parents are partially to blame for this as well as television addictions in kids. They allow them to play as long as they like, because then they know where their children are and kind of have the TV babysit the kids.

This is why my kid doesnt really get to watch television all that much. They will sit there like zombies and it kills their attention span. Video games are on a whole new level. There are so many to choose from in every genre, and VERY addictive to all ages really.

There are some movies that teach a good lesson though about what will happen to you if you want to live the life of a junkie. After watching "Basketball Diaries", I knew never in my life would I try heroin. It scared me that much. I mean I knew I never would anywyas, but the point was emphasized, and I think movies like these are great for younger kids so that they can see the negative consequences.
Smokers in Movies

I have noticed after watching that movie "Thank You For Smoking", that they were right about one thing: Seeing people smoking in movies sends subliminal messages to kids that smoking is cool. I heard there was a lot of discussions going on about banning smoking on television shows. Has anyone heard if this is true ?

Thanks for the tips. Luckily I am hardly around any smokers. I agree, it is those first three days that are the hardest. How long have you been smoke free? Do you still get cravings ?

Are you guys in here to encourage smokers to quit, or to talk about how dirty their lungs are ? If you have never been a smoker, then it would be hard to understand how incredibly hard it is to quit, and what we have to go through. It is easy to say we should have never started, but over 90% of smokers start when they are kids/teens, and we all know that kids don't always make the wisest choices. This may be a good point to give to young people though. Showing them a picture of a smoker's lungs may encourage them to never start.

This is a tough one. But first of all, you say that no matter what your children will not quit. That's called addiction. You may want to see about getting them some professional help. Second, yes, marijuana, in regards to lung damage is worse than cigarettes. Depending on how they smoke, smoking a "joint" is the equivalent of smoking 2 to 2.5 packs of cigs. This happens because most people hold the marijuana smoke in their lungs a lot longer than they usually would a cigarette, and also because most marijuana is smoked without filters.

Oh I definitely care about the price increase. The prices just seem to get higher and higher. But have I quit? No, not yet. You would think us smokers wouldn't be dumb enough to throw money away on things that are gonna eventually destroy us, but as Leighdu said, the addiction is very strong. I am determined now though. At the strike of midnight on New Years, I am tossing them away for good.

Also get lots of gum and cinnamon sticks. When you feel the urge to smoke, just grab some gum. I have heard quitting cold turkey is the hardest way to quit, but it is also the fastest way to get through the withdrawal.

I have gun, mints, toothpicks, carrots, etc. You name it and I probably have them ready . I am really hoping I will pull it off this time and get rid of the cancer sticks forever.

Since I am getting ready to quit in less than 3 days now, I would love to hear some success stories from people who have quit cold turkey and never looked back. I want to hear the good, bad, and ugly so I will know what to be prepared for. When I have quit before, I never lasted for more than one and then decided I would just quit another time. This time I want it to be for good, and I think hearing some success stories will keep me motivated.

I don't even want to look in that forum, because the last thing I need to read is people talking about how great smoking is and they don't want to quit etc. I don't think it should be banned though. Everyone, as stupid as theirs may be, have a right to their own opinions and freedom of speech. I just hope they have a way of keeping minors off those boards.

This is an example of a talented person that lost it all through addiction. From what I remember he had mixed heroin and cocaine together to make a "speedball" and then was given a downer pill because he was feeling too jittery. I really think his legend still lives on through his little brother, even though Joaquin is wonderful in his own right.

We have to draw the line somewhere. I mean we can't ban everyhting that causes people harm. What's next banning guns or maybe horror movies? At some point we have to be held accoun table for our own choices. As far as legalizing marijuana, due to my personal experience with certain illnesses that marijuana can help I do think it should be legalized for medicinal purposes and strictly controlled just like any other narcotic available by prescription. will some people abuse it? Sure. But many people already abuse prescription drugs.

I agree. Any marijuana legalized should be controlled and administered by medical professionals. There is still, after all these years, research being done on marijuana and not everything is known yet. There are so many different kinds that produce different effects, and some of the harsher effect have had people ending up in mental institutions.

what do you guys think would be a better addiction, television or internet? I personally think internet.

Neither is a good addiction, but I agree with the others. At least with the internet you can earn money, and research and learn more than you can with a television set. But it depends on what the internet is used for. It can be just as bad as television if you are just playing games and watching youtube.

I think people smoking in movies hasn't changed a bit. It seems that every movie that I see it has at least one person smoking. I think it would a good idea though to cut all that smoking crap out of movies as much as possible I guess for obvious reasons such as doing biographies though there is no way around it.

Ironically, as a long time smoker, I am happy with all the bans on smoking. It helps me even more especially now that I plan to quit for good. Even if not though, it is not our right to expose people to second hand smoke. If we want to smoke then THAT is our right, but not to impose it on others.

Congratulations ! It is reading things like this that motivates me and makes me sure I will be able to quit too. What helped you the most? When did the cravings go away?

I think that if you keep going the rate you are going, then you will eventually drink more and more. You say that you do not want to fall into addiction again, but once an addict always an addict. The only for success is to never touch another drink.
Candy Cigarettes

Does anyone remember candy cigarettes? You would blow on them and this sugary powder would come out, and then you unwrap them and chew the gum inside. Back when I was younger I never thought anything of it, but I am so glad that they were pulled from the shelves. That's just one more thing that make it seem cool for kids to smoke.

So far for me (It has been one day) is just the same as you. I am wanting a cigarette lots, but if I wait or get busy it goes away for a little while. Another thing I have noticed is that I am very dizzzy. I heard this comes from blood sugar lowering so I have been trying to eat healthy snacks when that happens.

That's exactly right. I know someone who runs a succesful porn industry online and he never watches it himself. He rakes in a lot of cash monthly too. The sad thing is that they really don't care if anyone is addicted. They only care about the money that is coming in.

I don't know if this is possible, but maybe you could ask your family and friends back in China to put the smokes away while you are visiting or at least to not smoke around you? Some people will be happy to oblige, while others may get offended. It can't hurt to try though.

I have been smoke free now for almost 4 days, and I will not lie and say it has been easy. At this very moment I could tear a half smoked cigarette out of someone's hand and drag it all down in one puff. But I am gonna keep trying. I am hoping the storm is just about over.
