Curing, Not Punishing Addicts

Curing, Not Punishing Addicts

Drug court has proven to be very
effective for many addicts in America.
The main focus for these programs is to rid the addict of their
substance dependancy, so that they can make strides in their own lives. However, these programs are not quite frequent
enough, so many addicts go untreated and flood America’s prison systems and
cost taxpayers millions every year.

If
you do a little research, it is actually cheaper for taxpayers to benefit an
addict with rehabilitation treatment, rather than paying to have them sit in
jail. I think it would be very
beneficial to pass a bill requiring drug offenders to complete a treatment
program, rather than go to jail for their first offense.

As
a former addict, it just doesn’t make any sense to jail someone with an
addiction for doing drugs. It’s part of
their addiction, it’s in their blood and brain chemistry. Their chances of relapsing after jailtime are
nearly 100%. So then we have repeat
offenders, overcrowded prisons and the problem is stagnant, along with the
jailed inmate.

They should punish those people who earn money in dealing this drugs that destroys like of innocent people. Some where just merely forced ans influenced and can't get out,. so they should help those to recover.

I totally agree with this. But I also believe that they should also be punished for their crimes. Because say an addict goes and kills someone, like they souldn't just be sent to rehab and get away with murder, they should serve jail time and recieve rehabilitation services. Not just for murder tho, hehe, like everything else. Whether theyre charged with assault or robbery or anything they should serve jail time but also recieve rehabilitation services that way when they are back out into the streets they are sober and for good.

Yup, rehab should be part of any jail terms given to those who commit drug-related crimes. Nobody should get off scot-free for anything. All it does is anger society and excessive leniency will result in people taking the law into their own hands.

Prison can transform some people, but for others, they're just lost causes.

I think they should go to jail for crimes they have commited, but their addiction should account to not as much jail time as a clear headed person would have. They should serve quite a while in a rehabilitation center to ensure that once this individual is back on the streets he or she will not retreat to drugs and repeat the same crimes.
