Geriatric Substance Abuse

While other adults who abuse drugs and alcohol have many similarities related to addicts, the elderly carry unique complications with their addictions. Age also comes with mixing up prescriptions, grief from outliving family members, and a belief that they're far too old for addictions to matter. Those who came of age when dependence on drugs and alcohol were closely kept secrets are wary of treatment.

Yeah I think it'd be really difficult to recover from an addiction at an older age. Changing your lifestyle is the hardest part and older people are always so set in their ways.

But dont you think older people are wise enough to know whats right and wrong and that abusing substances is wrong?

Well it's the same situation for a teenager who decideds to abuse drugs, they know what's right and wrong and that they're probably hurting their loved ones.  But just because they're in late adulthood, it doesn't mean that they're more or less susceptible to taking drugs and becoming addicted.

When an older person is in pain I dont think they're going to tcare whats right or wrong for them If their decision is to turn to drugs thats what they'll do because at the moment that's what will make them feel better. But within a few years it could lead them to their death, or worse health, or just plain regret.
