I've heard a lot of people talk about how spirituality and religion are different concepts. That spirituality is your own understanding of God and you just fit Him, whatever He may be into your life. And that religion is about letting go and living according to that specific religion, whatever that may be... I found some simplistic answers...
Spirituality is a question
Religion is an answer
Religion is a rigid, fixed set of beliefs about "Life"
Spirituality is an open, fluid relationship with "Life"
Religion is about knowing
Spirituality is about not knowing ("God" as I don't understand "God")
(Or maybe a "God" that understands me)
Religion is closed, fearful
Spirituality is brave, trusting
My concept of "God" is my last obstacle to the experience of "God"
Religion is about holding
Spirituality is about letting go
Religion is about being happy, later
Spirituality is about being happy, now
1. Spirituality is personal. You can define God any way you choose. Use any noun you want. Give God any qualities you personally believe are appropriate. You can even create a custom made “God of your own understanding”. This would be considered blasphemy in most religions.
2. You can claim personal awareness rather than blind faith (obedience). This was known as Gnosticism (practitioners of gnosis) in the early days of Christianity and was banished by the Roman Catholic Church. Most religions claim that blind faith is the best kind of faith. Many religious teachers will accuse you of heresy if you use the phrase “God as we understood him”.
3. You can claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection. Most religions consider anything less than perfection as being the work of the devil. The number 7 has a special connotation in biblical vernacular. It represents perfection. The number 6 is the symbol for less than perfection. This is where the notorious number 666 (mark of the devil) comes from.

There is a difference between the two. I think the main difference is that spirituality is private and religion is public. We define our own spirituality and religion defines us.
