Children/Adult Mental Health

New reports show that 1 in 10 children have some sort of mental disorder and 1 in 5 adults have a serious mental disorder.  But one thing I've noticed is that general practitioners hardly ever ask their patients how their mental health is.  I don't remember my pediatrician asking me when I was younger, and an estimate of only 56% of doctors actually do ask.  I think if doctors can figure out that their is a problem then that child can begin treatment and not have to suffer with it their whole life, but learn how to manage it.

Actually some doctors do ask this. I've came in to the doctors office for stress related issues a few times like headaches, kind of like heart pains too. But here's their way of asking, "Are you sexually active". They ask me that all the time, and i asked once why they ask me. Because what do headaches have to do with sex? And they told me usually when young adults and youth are sexually active their mental health is unhealthy. But I've never heard them ask me in any other way.

I think stress and mental health issues are different.  Stress isn't necessarily a disorder.  I've never had my doctor ask me this, I've always had to bring up any issues that I was experiencing.  When I was younger, I started developing depression and it was hard for me to bring it up with my parents, and then my doctor, it was made a big deal.  But if the doctor casually asks, it might be easier for the child to speak up.  Or any other things that might be going on like learning problems or headaches like you said.  And it could also depend where you go to see your doctor.  I know at urgent care facilities or HMO care, they have lots of patients to see, so the mental health of the patient is the last thing on the doctors mind.

I think that should be apart of your checkup. You get checked for everything but not mentally, and I believe that mental problems are just as important as physical problems, if not more. So during yearly checkups they should have a psychiatrist question the person as well.
