Those seeking nicotine help for nicotine addiction are more addicted now than they were several decades ago.  Apparently there is 10% more nicotine in cigarettes now than when they first came out.  This may be why smokers are now more addicted than ever.

For some reason I always thought that cigarettes contained more nicotine when they first came out.  I don't know very many people who smoke, the ones I do know are pretty moderate however. 

My friends dad smokes a lot and the other day he had me hand him a pack of ciggs. His nephew was there and he's like "Dang uncle sam you got the big kind" because I guess those ciggs were longer than the other ones. His reply was "you gotta get your moneys worth". Some people are looking for the ciggs with the most nicotine also and thats really bad. I think they should shorten the length of the ciggs. Maybe mentally smokers will think "I already smoked one" and in reality they smoked less because the cigg is smaller.

I think it's just the preference of each smoker.  Marlboro does have short cigarettes and I know some people who smoke those, but it just depends. I guess it's the taste of the cigarette, or just the way the box looks... I'm not so sure.  Or maybe just the first cigg they tried, and they stick with it.

Alot of people who continued smoking because their parents smoked or someone in their family smoked stick to the same kind as well.

I've noticed this also. I think its because when they first start they just mooch off their parents when their parents aren't paying attention. So they pretty much just get used to that kind and continue with it.
