should methadone be cut?
should methadone be cut?

Do you guys think that methadone should just be cut? From what I hear about it, it seems to be doing more harm then good. At first methadone was used to treat heroin addicts, but the thing is it doesn’t really treat them, it just makes them methadone addicts instead. Then methadone started being used as a painkiller, and not just a clinical one but one you take home. Well methadone takes a long time to metabolize, so some patients think nothing of just drinking alcohol or using sedatives which is a deadly coctail. Also since it takes a long time to metabolize, some patients may think “its not working” and just take more. Methadone is the fastest growing source of narcotic deaths in this country. Painkillers are much safer, anyone using methadone for a while is going to be taking it for the long haul.

Unfortunately, this is the case for many people. I personally believe it's better than being dependent on methadone, than street heroin. It's legal and can be monitored by a physician or drug rehab facility. But the point of it, is for patients to get off of it and move on with their lives and drop the addict mentality. My cousin was using meth for a couple of years, and he went to a mandatory drug rehab, and also half way home that was court ordered. It worked and he's going to culinary school in San Francisco and is clean and a youth leader, I'm so proud of him! But he didn't have to use any other drugs to help him get better, I'm sure it was very hard for him, but he's clean now and I'm sure it was worth it to him!

If a person got off a drug and then becomes addicted to methadone they could easily return to their former drug habit. Think about it, their former drug was cheaper than methadone and easier to get, when they're in real need of methadone because their withdrawals are kicking in, if they cant afford it or find it they're back to their old habits. It's better being completely drug free. I dont think methadone should be allowed to leave the hospital at all, not in prescription form or anything. It should be cut from the streets. It is wise to use it to treat a heroin addiction but should be used only in a treatment center and gradually slowed down to a complete stop and no dependency on any drug. People go to treatment centers to get treated not get treated for one addiction and come out with another.
