Higher IQs related to Alcoholism

A new study has found that higher intelligence scores at age 10 are associated with higher levels of alcohol intake during adulthood. According to the study published in the American Journal of Public Health, girls with higher IQ levels are more likely to develop alcohol drinking problems in adulthood. The study showed that every 15-point increase in childhood mental ability score is associated with 1.38 and 1.17 times increase in drinking problems among women and men, respectively. Previous studies had linked heavy drinking with certain genes. Two genes protect individuals against heavy drinking, the absence of which places individuals at a greater risk of alcoholism.
My sister and I were in the GATE program at my elementary school, which is for children with high IQs. This could be one of the factors that lead us both to alcoholism. That's so unfortunate though, like you're predisposed to drinking just because you're smart!

My little sister is unbelievably smart. She's ten and she cries when she gets a B! shes naturally smart and skipped 2 grades already. That worries me about her, i pretty much raised her and it would kill me to see her develop this addiction. I hope this doesn't affect her.

I think smart kids have to be challenged over and over. They get bored easily, and are always subconsciously craving more stimulus.

Have you noticed that smart kids are always brats and really hard to take care of? they could sometimes be so extremely shy infront of people but as soon as their in their own him they're rebelious and complete brats! My cousin is this way he's so so so smart. But he's always running around always talking back, he gets angry quickly. Even elementary school teachers agree on this.

I find this article really sad actually. There are some kids that are more gifted than others regarding intelligence and alcohol certainly makes anyone lose brain power. All children have something special about them; something that they can do well. And smart kids really need extra attention so that they don't become bored with life, and misunderstood.

The thing I dont get though, is how can smart kids get so bored? They're smart they can engage in so many activities. There'es history day, science fair, Gate programs. All these things require a lot of intelligence. I joined the science fair when I was in 5th grade, it took up most my time and I enjoyed it so much! They also can do sports. I think it is really important for parents to get their kids involved in extra curricular activies. Whether its with a school, with family friends, or with a country club. Anything. It gets them used to that lifestyle and they enjoy it. It keeps them off of drugs and alcohol when they're older.
