Drug addicts in some states have been given shopping vouchers to stay clean and take health tests.. so far it's proven to be effective.  It explains why providing rewards to those trying to break their dependance need to be addressed by trying to break the habit, so the behaviors need to be changed.  Its' not called a drug habit for nothing.  People who use drugs like heroin or crack can quickly become addicted, not only physically but also psychologically.  And while the physical dependence can often be overcome rapidly, in many cases the psychological dependence becomes ingrained.  The reasons why someone started taking the drugs- and keeps on taking them- are still there.
Some users in the program are addicts who are addicted to hard core drugs, so they are extremely dependant to the point of withdrawal.  With the extra incentives that are promised once they show improvement, they are twice as likely to stay off drugs compared to other treatment programs.  One member of the program used his credits to buy a new suit to wear to his job interviews, another used his credits to buy video games for his kids in hopes of rebuilding his family life.
A lot of people claim that incentive programs simly reward drug use, but in fact, they do the opposite.  people are being encouraged to turn their back on addiction, to begin the slow and often painful process of recovery.  This could be the key to breaking the habit..

That's a cool way of helping addicts.. I bet more people would want to quit if they see before hand that they're going to be rewarded.  As long as they're doing it for themselves and they made the decision to quit for their own sake, then the rewards will help them in the long run, but it has to be their decision.  When fighting a physical and psychological addiction, anything help goes a long way.

Rewards will always motivate a person, Its like when your a kid and your parents give you money for every A you get, its your motivation and it keeps you aiming for it. If a person can get rewarded for being sober I'm sure that it is going to motivate them. Then after a while they end up getting used to staying sober and they will start realizing how much better their life is sober. A little motivation could take you to great places.
