Shock treatment!

I grew up with an alcoholic father and at times considered drinking alcohol in front of him to shock him and show him how hurtful it is to see a family member slowly kill themselves.  However I'm glad  didn't do it, because I'm 100 percent sure it wouldn't of helped!  A friend of mine confessed to me how she once tried crack in front of her crack addicted mom to shock her and show her what it feels like to see someone you love smoking drugs.  I knew her mom use to be addicted to drugs, but I hadn't realized everything she went through to try to stop her.  It's such a sad situation having a parent with an addiction.  You walk around with it for the rest of your life, wishing things could be different.  But shocking them this way isn't helping anyone, only hurting your own self.  It could lead to an addiction and you'll regret it.

I think that showing them a video of themselves under the substance could be very beneficial. Show them one where they look ridiculous so that they can see the other side of themselves. Maybe that might knock some sense into them and get them to quit.

David Hasselhoff's daughter did this and it worked!  She videotaped her dad when he was really intoxicated while he was laying on the ground with his shirt off and eating a hamburger.  David was filming in the morning and a doctor was going to check his blood alcohol content and if he didn't pass then he'd be fired.  The video even ended up on the Internet and I'm sure it was pretty embarrassing for him.  Right after he sought treatment to control his alcoholism.

Do you know if he was mad at his daughter for this? Or did he thank her? I would be so mad at first but I'd love her forever for this. She gave him a wake up call and maybe even saved his life.

Alessandra, that’s so very true. And, I am glad you didn’t do it—there are certainly better ways to do it. Hurting yourself to hurt someone else is not advisable. What is advisable though is to make your parent(s) realize that they have a problem. Ask them to meet some doctor. You can also go for online help—there are plenty of them available. One such resource is: http://www.steppingstonecenter.org/ . Check them out. All the best!

The bottom line is that no one is going to quit unless they truly want to and they see that they can no longer live that destructive life.  I've pleaded with my dad before but he didn't quit drinking until he finally realized that he couldn't continue drinking.
