Has anyone else heard about this new type of eating disorder?  It's when someone is addicted to tanning, and they also tend to be addicted to cigarettes while obsessed with being skinny.  It's affecting a lot of college students, and they're spending most of their time maintaining their dependence to tanning.

ooooh a girl I went to high school with was like this. She'd spend 20 minutes in a tanning bed EVERYDAY!!!! can u believe that? It didnt even look good anymore she was too tan and not a pretty tan. Her skin started getting so ugly too. She was also super skinny. We went to disneyland together and we shared a room she would take no joke 45 minutes putting on her make up, she was like painting it on. I saw her without it and she really looked a lot better without makeup. I think she was a tanorexic as you say.

That's really sad, bc I love feeling like I don't have to wear make up.  Tan and skinny is not the only beautiful look out there.  I think girls should enhance their natural beauty, because that's the way you're supposed to look.  But I think tanorexia is more about self esteem issues, their outside appearance is how they judge themselves.

This isn't that new actually. It's been around for a couple years and I don't think it's just tanning and smoking without eating, but actually addicted to the tanning bed and I think the rest just follow along with that. The media and celebs show people what they are supposed to look like and people listen and follow their examples.

Last year I really wanted to be tan for my birthday so I went to a tanning booth for about a month. And I'd go in at the same time everyday. Also around that time a lady that looked about 45 would go in there, she knew the receptionists name and they were on friendly basis. She was really tan but it wasn't nice and her skin was wrinkly. I talked to her once and she said she was going to pick up her daughter from school early because its her birthday (the lady not the daughter) and she wanted to spend lunch with her daughter. so I thought her daughter was probably in high school, it turned out this lady just turned 30 and her daughters a 1st grader. All this tanning for so many years made her wrinkly and old. She goes to this tanning booth everyday, never misses a day and shes been going for years!

I know a lady thats like this too. tanning damaged her skin so much it made her look like 10 years older. Personally I wouldn't want my girl looking fake n' baked. I like natural tans that glow and those only come from none other than all natural sun!

Tanning beds give the obvious orangish glow.  Often times, it can give you a nice golden, brownish tan but that never lasts, the off-set color is what actually sticks.  It also stains your teeth, is extremely bad for your eyes, and also your skin!   I don't understand why some people care so much about being tan, but I guess it can be understood as an obsession.

I didn't know tanning beds can stain your teeth? I heard spray tans were the best. It nourishes your skin and gives you a natural looking tan that lasts 3 weeks. And you dont get all the bad UV rays that damage your skin.
