One of the first doctors who linked tobacco to mouth cancer died at the age of 88. George Moore started his research in the 50s, when there was no link to tobacco causing any form of cancer. I researched him in high school when I was doing a report on the dangers of tobacco. It amazes me what they found so long ago. I can't imagine the world when they didn't know how harmful smoking was; now that's all we hear about.

I've seen in a lot of old movies where the setting is about 50 years ago, how you're talking about.  They thought cigarettes were healthy for you.  Once they found out how unhealthy they were and that they actually caused cancer, they started calling them cancer sticks.  By that time it seems like everyone smoked cigarettes are was already addicted.

i agree with float_on. it seems like if you watch any old movie during that time everyone smoked, which would definitely make it hard on someone to quit when research like this surfaced. just looking at my family alone, all of my grandparents, great aunts and uncles and even parents smoked at one time or another or still do. i think too sometimes it just gets passed on from generation to generation because of that addictive gene and growing up around something like that.
