Murray Jarvik died at the age of 84. He was one of the researchers who came up with the nicotine patch. His interest to find a cure to smoking came about because his wife was a smoker and he never understood why it was so hard to quit. He was ahead of his time and already was conducting research before the surgeon general's reports started coming out in the 60s. He did many studies and did an experiment that involved monkeys. Because of his findings many people have been able to quit smoking and even led to other methods to quit.
