I'll admit that in the past I've been in a state of absolute turmoil and depression.  I've lost three of the most important people in my world and I became so isolated that I felt like if I died that no one would notice.  But, finally, there was a relief that somone had taken notice of the state I was in.  All I really needed was a loving, connecting, protective environment.
I was excited to go into treatment, I discovered that drugs and alcohol were just a symptom of my condition.  I had to look deep inside myself and deal with what was going on inside me.  Emotional responses are primitive.  Poeple anticipate feeling scared, alone and abandoned.  They don't want to deal with those feelings.  Drugs only help you to sidestep the developmental process.  There needs to be a willingness and consciousness to develop ourselves into emotionally strong humans.
Addiction is like being in a protracted adolescence, with the attendant lack of personal responsibility.  The important part of the equation is making the transition from adolescence to living an adult, emotional life which means responding instead of reacting to emotions.

Wow you have an interesting story don't you?  I can tell you've been through a lot of treatment also, those are the things that keep me going.  I'm glad that you were still able to find yourself even after everything you've been through.

I'm glad you know what got you addicted and what got you to turn to drugs. Many of the friends I know who are addicted dont know how they became addicted. They just started using because they liked the feelling.

Do you think deep down everyone has a reason that they're using drugs?  My best friend used drugs because he was extremely depressed and self-conscious inside but didn't want anyone to know about it.  And, others do it because they like the feeling, but there has to be a reason that they keep using even when they know if they don't stop, they're stuck with an addiction.

I dont believe that there is always a reason why they keep using it. They like the feeling so they keep doing it because its fun. You like the taste of ice cream so your going to keep eating ice cream, your not depressed you dont need it you just like it. You get what I mean? But once a person keeps using a drug for pleasure your body becomes used to the substance and can't go without it. If you drank coffee every morning for ten years once you stop your body is going to want it, and it will send out painful signals showing you that it needs it.

Yeah that could be a reason why so many young people stay addicts.  They may not even know they're addicted.  They may have beer every weekend because they think partying is normal and it's fun.  But in reality, sin is only fun for a season.  You eventually get sick of it and hopefully will move on to better things.
