Woman suing casinos for $20 million

Woman suing casinos for $20 million

Arelia Margarita Taveras, former NJ lawyer, is suing the Atlantic City casinos for $20 million, claiming the casinos failed to notice her gambling addiction. She claims that she lost over $1 million since the beginning of her gambling habit and lost her law practice, her apartment, her parents' home, plus she says she owes the IRS $58,000. Arelia Margarita Taveras also admits she dipped into her clients accounts to fund her gambling problem, which led to her disbarment last year and faces criminal charges stemming from the embezzlement.

"They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping. I would pass out at the tables. They had a duty of care to me. Nobody in their right mind would gamble for four or five straight days without sleeping," Arelia Margarita Taveras was quoted. A sad story which could only serve as a reminder to the millions of gamblers worldwide that gambling is fun when only in moderation.

Boo hoo hoo.  She just waltzed in, squandered her money, and threw a bitchfit over it. Casinos aren't legally required to kick out people with gambling problems, that's like banning someone from a store for having a shopping addiction.

She'll lose, it's her own damn fault she wasted her money. She chose to start gambling, she chose to keep gambling, and chose to spend that much money. One thing I know about addictions, is that you keep at it by your own free will so you can get your high. It her problem, not the casinos, they broke no law, thus, they're not responsible.

I can't believe she actually spent that much money and she lost her parents house?!  Well yes, it's her fault that she spent that much money but I sort of feel sorry for her.  It seems like she absolutely lost control of herself, like she couldn't stop.  Now that she's right-minded she's blaming the casinos and not herself.  She may have a small chance of winning tho, she is a lawyer afterall.

Well maybe casinos should have rules like if you're at a bar; making it so they would legally have to cut you off it you have had too much. If that lady was there 5 days straight in the same clothes and not eating anything then I think that's a red flag. Of course, casinos are big and it could be hard to spot, but hopefully something can be done.

Nah, then the high-rollers would get pissed off at being asked to leave, and the Casinos would lose business. Besides, there are loads of Casinos in places like Vegas, they'll just take their fortune elsewhere.

Aries, you're a gambler right? $30 says that she'll gamble away her winnings if this lawsuit gets anywhere.

But yeah, that's like suing Micky Dee's cause you got fat, or suing a bar cause you got drunk. Completely stupid, and when you file these suits, you embarrass the whole country.

I'm really curious as to what Judge let this pass. I don't understand it. It was her decision, but now sue them because she did something stupid?  When will people start taking responsibility for their own actions...

When a Judge throws someone in jail for filing a frivilous lawsuit, and seizes all of their property to pay the court fees, and allows the defendant to countersue for whatever he likes.

haha I agree she probably would. But I really doubt she'd win. Really thats redicious, its her fault she gambled the money why the heck would the casino stop her? Thats like a person running for 4 days straight and then getting a heart attack. Are they going to sue everyone they ran by? I think she should take the consequences and deal with them. She's a lawyer she should work her butt off now, pay back the money she ows buy her parents a house and her self a house. Its her fault and she has to live up to it and accept it no matter how hard it is.

Well, this 55 year old man is suing Mirapex (the medicine that is used to treat Parkinson’s and restless leg syndrome. He is also suing the companies that are involved with the drug, which totals $3million dollars because he claims he became addicted to gambling from using it. He has been taking the drug since 2002 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He believes the company didn’t provide their users with accurate or enough information on the medicine and its side effects.

purpley-i have heard of this medicine doing that to people, but i havent heard an actual story before. i guess for his sake it might be hard to prove that the medicine did in fact get him addicted to gambling. i wonder how the hearing will go..i hope in a way he will win so they see what their medicine is doing to people and maybe they could alter the drug to not have that affect on people.

This was a while back too, shouldn't the hearings be over by now?

Her lawsuit was dismissed by a judge.  He said that a gambling problem is not a toxic habit, and it is not up to the casinos to physically stop gamblers.  The casinos denied any wrong doing and said that she brought it on herself.

lol her suing the casino was pretty funny and ridiculous but i feel bad for her. She has so much to pay and probably so many people angry at her and on top of that a hard habit to kick.
