Because of a Girl

A fellow church member left this summer to fight in Iraq. He left a girlfriend of two years behind, his family and church family. After him being gone for around 3 months his girlfriend cheated on him. She was still attending church after he left and then we started noticing that she stopped coming. I started talking to his parent to see where she was and they unraveled the whole story. Well things get worse; he committed suicide a month later. The suicide rate among soldiers is the highest it has been since the 1990s according to our local news.  83 soldiers killed themselves in 2005 as compared to 67 in 2004 for reasons just like this. I’m still in total shock and I can’t believe she did this and did it while he was away. She could have at least broken it off before he left. I feel so terrible for his family and the ex girlfriend didn’t even show up to the funeral. This is such a heartbreaking story and we are still all so devastated by it.

I never really have thought about suicide in the war, only death from fighting in it. What a sad story. Isn't amazing how much one person can impact your life especially in his state of mind. It probably made him happy while he was there to think about her waiting for him to return, but instead all he could think about was her being with another guy. Sorry to hear about your loss.

One of my friends started dating this girl but he wasn't taking her very seriously. I asked him to tell me more about it and it turned out that the girl has a boyfriend thats out in Iraq and that is totally in love with her. I thought it was so messed up for him to be doing that when she ahs a boyfriend, but he kept saying that oh its just for fun nothing serious and things like that. We all tried talking him out of it but it didn't work. I dont know what happened to the girl and the soldier but now my friend is dating this other girl and really loves her, but in that past 4 months shes cheated on him 3 times of which he knows about. I guess karma really does come back around.

I wonder, though, how much we all think about the war at all, let alone about how the people in it - on all sides - are dying?

Let's face it.  The media buries the war down deep in its coverage - Britney Spears' breakdown gets far more attention than what goes on in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I think that the governmnt kinda likes it that way.  If we had a draft and more American families had their sons and daughters fighting overseas, we'd be a bit more attentive.
