Turn it off at dinner

One thing that annoys me about my family is that none of them talk while eating dinner, because they're far too busy watching TV. Now, I'm not one to believe that "Families who watch TV at dinner will have kids who are more likely to drink" BS, but it does annoy me when a social event where everyone sits at the table, is in utter silence save for "pass the salt."

My family always have the TV on whilst eating dinner for me it is actually quite nice because it is the only time I get to watch a bit of TV in the day! I think the only time my family do not watch TV at dinner time is when it is Christmas and we all sit round the table for Christmas dinner. Its not something that has ever annoyed me though, I would rather than that, then everyone sat in silence as they have nothing to say.

It annoys me too, and I agree that I don't think that kids are going to grow up being criminals or alcoholics because they watch tv at dinner, but it has been proven that people eat faster and swallow faster and usually consume more when watching tv while eating, so that is reason enough for me not watch tv while at dinner.

With my family were not allowed to talk at dinner because the TV is on and dad wants to watch the news. But I remember when I was a kid and there was no TV in the kitchen our family used to communicate more and we'd talk all together during dinner, that was family time. Now dinner is just news time.

With my family we watch TV during dinner but we also talk throughout it. Its usualy the news that my dad used to put on but while its on we talk about the stuff that's going on in the news. We each share opinions and ask questions about things we didn't know. If there were things other than whats on TV that we wanted to talk about we still did, the TV didn't stop us. I think that was healthy.
