I know it's hard for you being the kid around the house who can't possibly instruct your parents to do this and that. Well, you can try being with your dad when he's home so he'll not think about smoking. You can make him treats, ask him to go out to dinner, etc. or anything he'll be occupied with so he'll not think about smoking for at least an hour. And talk to him about it too. Slowly you might just lead him to recovery.

You are a very strong person to see this happening to him and to want to make a difference in his life. it is also good if you yourself have not followed in his steps. An intervention might just be what he needs at this point in his life. Check locally or even on the internet for interventions services in your area.

It is so hard to watch a parent, or anyone you love, destroying themselves with addicting behaviors. My parents are both alcoholics and I hate watching them go downhill and not make the most of their lives. Maybe let your dad know that what he is doing is hurting you. Perhaps if he won't stop for himself, he would for you.

I'm in the same situation, although my mom only just started smoking a year or two ago. She doesn't want to quit because it helps her when she feels stress--what she fails to take into account is that the addiction withdrawl creates a lot of the stress itself which then leads to more smoking. She also saw my grandmother smoke for fifty years without and obvious "symptoms," so I guess she feels like "it won't happen to her."

If its smoking ciggs then honeslty don't be so tough on him. A very large percentage of the world smokes ciggs, and although it is bad and it will harm his lungs and everything its not worth fighting over and causing a bunch of drama. Talk to him as much as you can and try talking him into it but dont cause problems.
Now if its marijuana then you do have a problem and I suggest an intervention.
