Prescription drug addiction is major problem affecting millions of individuals and it is growing and the demand for drug rehab, but there is not much awareness about the magnitude of the problem. Because the nation has a major problem with other illicit drugs (like cocaine, marijuana, crack), prescription drug abuse has not been a major priority for both the health and legal professionals.
What are your experiences?

But people have been taking perscription drug abuse more seriously. Lately on the news there has been plenty of pharmacists arrested for distributing it. And schools are taking it much more seriously also.

This is a heavy problem indeed. I have heard of some people who were actually addicted to a common cough syrup. And the most alarming detail about this is that a number of cough syrups can even be bought without prescription!

Yes, there is a need for intervention, but it is still going on more than people are thinking. People are filling their prescriptions just so that they can sell those drugs as they often bring in higher amounts of money than some other drugs. I think doctors need to do more in monitoring who and when they are dispensing too.

I am addicted to Xanax. Sometimes I get sooo mad at my doctor for giving them to me because I have a family history of addiction. But then I remember it was my choice to start taking them when I wasn't having panic attacks.
I totally understand why people sell their drugs. I've thought about doing it because you can get like 5 bucks a pill and that works out to a lot of money. And some people don't even pay for their pills that they sell on the street. Like medicare or insurance pays for it. Doctors need to do more but at the same time I know that addicts are the best liars in the world. I could convince you the sky is green when I am looking for a fix.

Missywins, please get some help. Xanax wont kill you right away, but the addiction to pain killers and tranquilizers can be extremely dangerous. Just please get help before something terrible happens.
