Is Drug Education Good Enough?

Is Drug Education Good Enough?

I've noticed that a lot of drug 'education' schemes amount to 'just say
no' - or, they try to be 'in touch' with the age-group they're
marketing to, and end up coming across as false or patronising.

Has anyone seen any that aren't like this? I think a good anti
drugs campaign is one that is honest and lets the people being taught
make their own decisions, or brings in people who have just recovered
from addiction to talk about it. We did that with teen pregnancy
when I was at school (a girl who had just left the year before came
back to talk about how her friends didn't want to hang out any more
because she was 'boring' since having a baby).

We can't tell our kids 'don't take drugs' - in my opinion. It has to be their own decision for the right reasons.

I agree that in order for drug education to be effective, you can't talk down to kids. I believe that presenting the facts, including facts from recovering addicts, would be the best way to get the message across and help kids make their own decisions about drugs.

Yes, using practical and real-life examples in the campaigns against drug makes it easier to understand the ill-effects drugs can have on our health and well being and has better chances of being a deterrent than mere theories have.

Anything you tell your kids is usually for the best, you can tell them but you have to show them why you are telling them not to. You have to show and prove for them to understand where you are coming from.

I think when it comes to kids, all the education isn't going to help when you have movies making drugs and alcohol look like so much fun. When I was younger there were so many movies with young kids partying and having a good time.

NO they are not enough. Where I live they are teach them in a program in 5th grade. But what happens two years from now when these same kids are pressured into things and just saying no is not that easy for them. I think that they need a constant reminder.

I mean honestly what can you do other than try to talk to the kids, You can't follow them 24 hours a day and you can't beat them upside their heads so the only left to do is talk to them and hope that they listen and understand.

I don't think that any amount of education, whatever it's form, will dissuade teens from experimenting with drugs. No matter what messages of doom are delivered to them from teachers, ex addicts, or the media, we all want to find out for ourselves don't we?

The drug education programs that they teach in 4-6 grades are not enough. They need to continue them each and every year in order for kids to learn the effects. It is not enough for them to know they are bad for them and to see pictures of what happens to people, they need to know what to look for and how to say no when they are dealing with peer pressure.
