What are some alternative things to do instead of the addictions we are so accustomed to? I, myself, get busy when I am tempted to go for a drink. I go fishing and sit there for hours. What about you? Do you have an alternative..a plan b..for when you are tempted to give into your addiction?

Actually, drynout, I saw someone suggest activities like exercise, going to the gym, going on walks, fishing or other activities far removed from the town liquor store. With me, I find staying away from my temptations is the best remedy.

Are you in AA?

spend time with your family, get to know them more. also traveling like going out of town long drives scenery and stuff, if you like fishng i think you would like that. or you could also get a hobby like cooking. or even education, what if you went back to school?

Going back to school is a great idea kobegirl - that or starting a new hobby or pastime. Something that takes up a lot of time & keeps your hands occupied. Like writing a book, setting up a website or playing a sport - thay can be addictive, but in a much less harmful way

I don't think there is such a thing as a good addiction as an addiction is something that is having a bad effect on your life. It would be better to think of things like this as simply new interests or activites.

Whereas an "addiction" describes a condition that takes over your life in a harmful manner, I don't suggest getting addicted again. I do understand the need for an aversion. I became obsessed with my own health and fitness. I set goals to run 5K and then 10K at a time when I could barely walk to the end of the block. I stayed focused/obsessed with this goal. I dropped everything in my life that was not going to help me get there, and I ran 3 5K races within 7 months of setting the goal. Eating right, drinking plenty of water, exercising at least once a day, reading about fitness (Runner magazines and books).

Everytime I want to drink Coca-cola, I simply try to find another substitute for it, like a fruit juice or just water. You can actually fight the addiction if you really want too. Just have self control over yourself and you'll get through it.

My only caution is to be careful what you substitute one addiction with. Time with family as was mentioned is a good idea, but others can be replacing one addiction for another.

That's what I was thinking and I've seen that happen before. I knew this guy who replaced his drug addiction with NA, I know that NA is a support group, but people do seem to get addicted to the group.
