In the UK near Oxford there is a Tolkien community, where all of the members who live there are totally immmersed in the world of Tolkien, dress, language, affilliation and the, is this addiction or is it 'just something your really into'?

Its a tough call, its like the folk who are into battle re-enactement and get all gear made up and wifes who become camp followers - personally I would come down on the side of 'NO'

By Tolkien, do you mean Tolkien the author of the "Lord of the Ring" book sequels? Sorry for sounding so clueless. It's just that I'm not from the U.K. and I'm not familiar with the group. But I'm eager to know, though.

Well, one defination of addiction is:

"A habitual or compulsive involvement in an activity, such as gambling.:"

And by this I would say yes it is an addiction. But I also usually add this to the defination.

"A habitual or compulsive involvement in an activity, such as gambling.:" Which leads to severe negative consequences in other areas of the persons life.

EG: If someone in the tolkien group was so involved that they lost their job because they spent all their work time organising events rather than actually doing what they were paid for then yes it is an addiction. Otherwise no.

I like the sound of a Tolkein community, my first tatoo I had done is of the hard back cover of the Lord Of the Rings. I might read up some more on this community and give an update

I used to be a part of a science fiction group a lot like the Tolkien
group described here. Most of the people were just regular people
who happened to do unusual things on the weekends. It was a way
to relax, and a lot of the stuff they did was to raise money for
charity. I think it's perfectly normal and healthy as long as you
keep grounded - everyone unwinds in different ways.

There are Civil War reenact-ors, there are groups like the Society of Creative Anachronisms (SCA) that dress and act like medieval characters. What is wrong with a Tolkien society?
