I wondered about this last night, do companies like cigarette companies increase the prices to discourage people with addictions from buying it, or are they doing it to rake in more money?

I think it's the latter, if something is in high demand, it will sell, no matter what the price.

Yeah of course, if its in demand it will sell and if people are addicted or want to smoke then they will buy cigarettes no matter what the price, it may discourage a few from buying but that is probably only about 5%. Even if people can not afford to buy them they will find a way round it.

They jack it up to make more money of course. If they were so interested in people's health they would have gotten rid of their smutty tobacco companies years ago when they found out that they were killing people.

I think it's just government control, for taxes to support things like schools. My entire community college was built from revenues of cigarette tax :]
