More than 28,258 internet users are viewing pornography
every second in the United States. Sex was never intended to become a spectator
sport but it has become that. Only two clicks on a mouse pad brings pornography
home. People think that pornography is just a secret side issue in life and
that it won’t affect their lives. However pornography begins to rearrange life
to accommodate one’s addiction.
It becomes a cheap way of avoiding what people perceive as
the expensive cost of intimacy. It soothes something within us but also
perpetuates an immaturity in the process. The annual revenue generated byt the
U.S. porn industry is $13 billion compared to $6 billion three years ago. This is
more than the combined revenues of the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and
Hockey.
Crossings community church offers counseling for families
and individuals plagued by pornography. Four counselors visit with 60 people a
week struggling with pornography. We don’t have clear sense of just how
destructive pornography is because we want t keep this delusion going on in our
heads as Americans, “I’m an individual. I can do what I want. As long as it’s
consenting and it’s not hurting anybody”.
Parents need to know that 90% of 16 year olds have viewed
pornography on the internet. Parents who discover their child watching porn
should take the problem very seriously without overreacting. Sexual curiosity is
normal for children but viewing porn is not a normal developmental stage of
adolescence. Children do not have impulse control and mature judgment. Parents can
purchase computer software’s that block porn access online.
