I guess its verging on addiction but I think more obsession than addiction, the word addiction does not feel right, I'm pretty obsessed with checking mail but that may well be that as my job is IT and work issues are related to me by mail giving that 'must read mail' feeling

I guess I understand what you feel. In my case, I check my e-mail everytime I run out of doing something. Sometimes, whenever I'm infront of the computer, which could take hours actually, I absent-mindedly open my mails even without meaning to. I know this doesn't qualify as an addiction, but then again, I do it all the time I beginning to think it is.

Dude its an addiction lol. I do it too. My wife wants to shoot my pda. Its not like its data critical, but i just have the need to constantly check. Sometimes i forget my pda and then i just forget about the urge to check, so i realize I can leave without checking my email 24/7.

I have to check mail several times a day. it is the same addition that people have with regular mail, the only difference is they only have regular mail once a day, but they wait until that mail man comes checking the box several times until it finally does.

Perhaps it's a mannerisms. I've been recently having the same 'addiction/mannerism' too. Haha. I always tend to refresh my inbox window almost once every 5 minutes. But I guess it wouldn't have any bad effects, right? Oh.. here i am again. See you guys. *checks mail inbox* haha

I posted this in another thread to, but I am very addictive to my
e-mail as well. It's like I could be out with friends or family and
have to run back home for something. I might only have a minute to
spare, but I will sit down and check my mail anyways, even if it is on
a holiday, and I know that nobody will have wrote to me. I'll still
check anyways out of obsession.

I think you are right in tagging it an obsession instead of an addiction. It's also the feeling of delaying or missing something important that perhaps contributes to it. At one point , I used to check my mailbox every 10-15 minutes but I have been less restless since the time I switched to email

I check my mail quite frequently, usually when I've run out of anything else to do on the computer. Like someone else said, I get the feeling of missing out on something if I don't check it fairly frequently.

It is perfectly normal to check your email regularly if the potential for a message to be there is real. Especially if you get a lot of messages and you hate letting them build up like a trash can that never gets emptied.

Like many things discussed in this forum, obsession is the correct term not addiction. An addiction is something that your body is physically attached to and will probably be sick without.

The American Heritage Science Dictionary

addiction (?-dik'sh?n) Pronunciation Key

  1. A physical or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, such as a drug or alcohol. In physical addiction, the body adapts to the substance being used and gradually requires increased amounts to reproduce the effects originally produced by smaller doses. See more at withdrawal.
  2. A habitual or compulsive involvement in an activity, such as gambling.

Then I would hardly call it addiction if you have to check for work purposes.
