Gambling Addiction
Gambling is an activity, which in today's society, is acceptable and fun.
But at the same time, it is also an activity where behavior can become
compulsive and destructive. In most cases, gambling is legal. And because
it is legal, it can be easily ignored as a common and pleasurable activity.
Those who become addicted are actually playing a very high stakes game,
where the risks involved are family, friendships, money and reputation.
There are 2 general types of problem gamblers:
-
Action gamblers
Typically males. Generally starts in teen years, and more often than not,
they are very intelligent individuals. Their games of choice require skill,
i.e. poker, black jack and sports betting. They're usually very ego driven,
controlling, sociable and need approval and confirmation.
-
Escape gamblers
Approximately 75% are female. The problem typically shows up later in life,
30 or older. Codependent behavior is usually evident. The games usually
involved require little to no skill, like bingo, slots, lottery, etc. These
types of gambling free the person of emotional and perhaps physical pain during the act.
There are some preconditions and predispositions for gambling addictions. Boredom,
stress, grief and loneliness top the list, but there are many more.
