Drug Addiction
There was once the theory that a person was a drug addict if he needed the drug daily, or that he would go through
withdrawal symptoms when he stopped using the drug. The theory was also that drug addicts were unemployed, poor and from
the inner city.
Not true! Many drug addicts don't use drugs daily and don't experience physical withdrawal if they stop using. Most
drug addicts are people are not only employed but appear to be functioning normally.
The more drug use begins to affect and take control over a person's life, the more likely it is that he or she has a
drug problem. Most of the time though, unfortunately, drug abusers are the last ones to recognize their own dependence and
addiction.
Here are some warning signs of drug abuse:
- inability to relax or have fun without drugs
- sudden changes in work or school attendance and quality of work or grades
- frequently borrowing money, selling possessions, or stealing
- angry outbursts, mood swings, irritability or overall attitude change
- talking incoherently or making inappropriate remarks
- expressing feelings of exhaustion, depression and hopelessness
- engaging in secretive or suspicious behavior
