Addiction Recovery
Before someone can start the recovery process, it is important to understand what addiction is. So what is addiction?
According to The Free Dictionary, addiction means a "habitual psychological or physiological dependence on a
substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control." Once upon a time, the term "addiction" was used
almost exclusively for substance addiction. For example, addicts were thought of as people who were totally dependent
on drugs like heroin, cocaine, nicotine or alcohol. It is known as "substance addiction". But nowadays it
is known that people can become addicted to certain behaviors also. There are those that may become dependent on
gambling, shopping, sexual activity, eating (or not eating), or a multitude of other activities.
So now we've figured out what addiction is. The next step is to define recovery. Recovery is, in the easiest of terms,
about nothing more or less then the recovery of life itself. It's about getting back something of value (life), not just
giving up something that is strongly desired (addiction). In other words, recovery is about expansion, health and growth.
It is about freedom and liberating oneself from the constricting demands of addiction.
