To your knowledge- is there any way we can force our child into a rehab hospital? We have called police, talked with probation department, DA and everyone begging for help. Regardless of threats of suicide, police said all they can do is take him to a juvenile facility, not a hospital. I was told that if he threatens suicide the police have to take him in for a psyche evaluation. He was class president, 4.0, best all around, but after using ecstasy he is someone we don't know and has become violent. How do we get him help when the only people taken to court has been us because we are unable to compel him to attend school. He will be 16 in November. The last time he became violent we called the police, but we caved when they told us that the act he committed was a felony and he could serve hard time with no professional help. He wouldn’t let me use the phone to call 911, and they said under Home Land Security, it is a felony to refuse anyone the right to emergency services. We feel hopeless for him.
Unfortunately there's no way you can force your child into wanting to go to treatment willingly, however you can take your child to a treatment facility and leaved him no other option but to go into treatment. Getting him there will be the hardest part. Using a qualified interventionist is your best bet. There are many great facilities out there for adolescents who can help you and have worked with other families in similar situations. Visions adolescent treatment center in Southern California is one of the best. The adolescent treatment centers have on premise schooling available. Wilderness programs are also a good option. Often the best way to approach an adolescent is to help him or her see the possible fun they could have in treatment. Often people don’t associate fun with treatment, but many adolescent programs can be very fun experiences, especially the wilderness programs.
