My Husband is Addicted to Pills

Marty Brenner - 2/12/2008

My husband is addicted to pills. He has already had 2 seizures. I worry about him all the time and wondering if one day I am going to wake up and he will be dead. He is trying to quit by himself but, I don't think he can. Every time that he has tried, he will quit for about a couple of weeks that I know of, then he is right back at the same thing again. He abuses Ultrams, has take Kilonopins, Xanax...basically whatever he gets his hands on. Do you have any advice for me so I can help him? – Jacqueline

Dear Jacqueline

My first suggestion is put your husband in treatment .

It sounds like your husband needs help quickly. He has an addictive personality and he can take the wrong combination of pills as we just heard about Heath Ledger who recently dies from this same thing.

Your husband cannot stay of the pills for any length of time. He needs help to work through his issues. He has to be clear headed and be able to seek professional help if he does not want to go into treatment.

Jacqueline, please for your sake, go to a self help group such as al anon to speak to people who can relate to your situation. Speak to someone, please do not do this alone.

Good luck, Marty
