Compulsive Spending with Three Children

Dr. April Benson - 2/8/2008

I am so sad. I know I am addicted to shopping. The thought of not going to shopping terrifies me. What will I do? I'm married with three children. My husband and I are both elementary school teachers. We pay our bills on time, but with our $8,200.00 income/$ 3,600 goes to mortgage (thanks to 3 refies to consolidate credit debt) and roughly $2,300 to pay credit bills. I'm always using credit to shop for fun things for the kids or nice things for our home. I get restless when I'm home. I'll even go to the grocery store to get that high of buying something- even a lean cuisine. Is there a therapist in my area? (Huntington Beach, CA) - Nancy

Dear Nancy,

I'm so glad that you've come to the point of knowing that you need help with your shopping addiction. Effective help is available. The person I know of in the Los Angeles area is Dr. Tim Fong, who is the head of the UCLA Impulse Control Disorders clinic. His number is 310-825-9989.

In addition, I will be starting a 12 week telephone coaching group in the near future. Everyone in the group will go through the Stopping Overshopping Program. If you are interested in finding out about the group, go to the group program page of my website www.stoppingovershopping.com and then click on group program. If, after reading it, you are interested in being notified about the next group, fill out the opt-in box at the bottom of that group coaching page and you will automatically be notified about the next group.

I wish you courage and perseverence for a successful recovery.

Regards, April Benson
