Body Image Issues

Rebecca Cooper - 6/11/2008

I have dealt with body image issues my entire life. I wouldn’t say I have a typical eating disorder (bulimia/anorexia), but I am compulsive with what I eat and how I look. I exercise to the extreme and will go on diets that I know are not healthy for me. Are they any options I have to overcome this besides a residential treatment center? I don’t have insurance and no way to pay for something like that. Thanks. – Hilary

Dear Hilary

I have one question for you. How often do you think of food, weight, or body size? If it a large percentage of the time, you can be sure it affecting your quality of life. Disordered eating could be yo-yo dieting, compulsive exercise performed to loss weight, and use of other substances.

We know diets don’t work, so what does? Some people find that eating three meals a day and not snacking is a big help. This way you can eat what you want with your meal. If you deny yourself of what you really want, you will eat something else and not feel satisfied, then you eat some more. Sometimes it is better to get what you want first and eat it with your planned dinner.

Most people with disordered eating are using food and the THOUGHTS of food, weight, or body image, as a way of avoiding feelings or negative thinking. It could be helpful to write what you feel first, before you eat when you are not hungry. You can get to the source of the feeling and will not need to push it down with food. Don’t forget breakfast! The first meal of the day starts your metabolism.

There are other options besides residential treatment. See www.rebeccashouse.org or call 800-711-2062 for more information. Outpatient treatment or work with a therapist AND a registered dietitian can put you back on track.

Sincerely,

Rebecca
