My question is concerning my husband. He is ADHD and is prescribed Adderall XR. Since the beginning of our relationship it has been an issue, because he does often take more than his prescription and then go several days without the medication during which time he will sleep. In 2004, a month before we were to be married he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and with that diagnosis brought many more problems, especially with focusing. His doctor increased his prescription from 60 mg to 120 mg a day. He still has a tough time taking his prescription. He also takes Lunesta to sleep. In addition he takes Caffeine pills on occasion to stay awake, and was diagnosed with depression last month. I know there is a problem. I have also found that he has been looking at Internet Pornography and storing it on his computer. His maternal granmother has Bipolar Disorder. Could he? Does he have an addictive personality and need treatment? I am at a loss. I love him dearly, but we need help.
Your husband shows signs of an addictive personality. Most people take medication as prescribed, by taking more he runs out early causing a down side affect of having to sleep when he is not on the medication. His body is building up a tolerance and causing the dosage to increase causing him to take different medication to stay awake/go to sleep etc. In doing this, his body is having a roller coaster affect on his brain chemistry which can cause depression to set in.
It is very common for heightened sexual arousal on stimulants. He should be honest with his doctor and tell him what is happening. A suggestion is a drug on the lines of stritera. In my opinion, he needs to see a doctor and check if he also has Bipolar disorder (there is medications that work real well if your husband has this disorder and if taken properly he can function normally). Yes, he should seek treatment and at the same time there is a support group called Al-Anon that I recommend you look into.
