Movies/DVDs are dangerous territory for sex addicts trying desperately to recover successfully. The movie theater can be a nightmare if you don't have boundaries in place. I can't begin to tell you how many stories I have heard of precious recovery being damaged without pre-thought out movie boundaries.
Movies/DVDs are a great form of entertainment and can be enjoyed in a safe manner even for sex addicts. I myself enjoy movies, but only with firm boundaries. Some of the boundaries that sex addicts in my practice have utilized in order to maintain sobriety are as follows.
- No movies within the first 90 days of recovery.
- No "X" or "R" rated movies.
- No "R" rated movies for the first 90 days of recovery.
- No "R" or "PG-13" rated movies (PG-13 can have full nudity).
- Only go to movies that you would take a child to see ("PG" or "G" rated).
- Read movie reviews in paper and avoid "nudity" or "adult situation" movies.
- Close your eyes during the movie when you sense a scene leading in a sexual direction.
